My 91 325is has had the EXACT same problem for a couple years now, and I swore it was the alternator. Thanx a lot!

You're welcome! I was really happy today to have finally realized I too was right all along and to have it be a simple fix. The bad alternator is made by Valeo and I've also heard that these go bad more often and earlier than the Bosch brand. I'm going to try to replace it with a Bosch. If you're going to replace your alternator yourself (it's easy), loosen the power steering pump and release the tension on the belt that drives it first. This makes it much easier to get to the lower bolt on the alternator. You'll need a 13mm and 19mm socket or wrench and don't forget to disconnect your battery first.
