I was really joking there....sorry! No, first take a white sheet of scratchpad paper, and mark it with a sample. Semi-fresh P/S fluid is a reddish, rustlike color. ATF fluid is the same too. Motor oil is either black, or preferably, a molasses brown. If you are totally confused- blot a sample of all the fluid samples, on that paper to narrow-down your culprit.
The reason I ask you do this, is because on these (or all)cars- the run trail of leaking fluids originate in some of the most uncanny of places. Once you are certain it is the P/S blood- check your steering rack to see if the bleed valve is not busted-off. If thats OK, your MOST LIKELY perp
is none other than them heavy-duty rubber hoses, that plumb your fluids throughout. Remember, P/S fluid is caustic, and will eventually eat its way out nonetheless. If your car is an auto- check the alumium lines connecting through your radiator, cooling the fluid to your tranny.
Good Luck!

I have a 89' 325i. The power steering fluid is leaking severly from the rubber (CV boot -I think) boot on the steering linkage. The boots are on both sides of the car. The boot doesn't have a hole, it just pops of the linkage and fluid starts to leak.
I put it back on, but the fluid kept going low, then finally the boot popped of the linkage again.
I think it may be a broken pump, which causing too much fluid to build in the boot, forcing it to pop off.
Does anybody have any insight? I don't want to buy a new PS pump and find out that that isn't the problem.
Is there some type of return pump or system which isn't working.
Thanks!!
