Okay this isn't the best solution but it is the cheapest. In my experience the rack is probably no good. If you've got the money to change it that's the best fix but not the cheapest. What I did was cut the power steering belt and drained all the steering fluid (turn wheel back and forth at idle until steering effort gets easier). This gives you manual steering which I prefer anyway. If you get rid of the belt and all the fluid it will drive like a manual steering car not like one whose power steering quite (ie imposible to turn the wheel!!!)

I have been driving my car like this for 20k miles with no ill effects. If your rack is not good you've got nothing to lose. The only damage you can do (as long as you cut the belt) is to the rack and it's already screwed. You may even like manual steering. You can actually feel the road. If you don't like the feel of manual steering you can always put a new rack on and you've lost nothing.

Good Luck

I have a 89' 325i. The power steering fluid is leaking severly from the rubber (CV boot -I think) boot on the steering linkage. The boots are on both sides of the car. The boot doesn't have a hole, it just pops of the linkage and fluid starts to leak.

I put it back on, but the fluid kept going low, then finally the boot popped of the linkage again.

I think it may be a broken pump, which causing too much fluid to build in the boot, forcing it to pop off.
Does anybody have any insight? I don't want to buy a new PS pump and find out that that isn't the problem.
Is there some type of return pump or system which isn't working.

Thanks!!
