I emailed you details to your hotmail account, as you posted on the E36 board also, what you do is remove the distributor cap noting where the lead for plug # 1 is, turn the engine over on the crank pulley until the distributor rotor arm is pointing to plug # 1, push a drill bit into the gap in the block where you pulled out the rubber plug and keep on turning the engine until you can push the drill bit further in, this locks the flywheel.

Failing that unbolt the valve cover and remove the plastic oil catcher thing, turn the engine until the square section WITH the holes drilled are ppointing upwards with the square side at the same angle as the cambelt housing - this is evident when you look at it, then simply lock the flywheel in place using a drill bit.

Incidently the timing hole is at the back-right on the engine on the bell housing, not the inspection plate on the underneath of the engine.

If you need any more help simply drop a post to me on the E36 board - fao Miles (UK)

Can any one help me get this engine set up for TDC and renewing the timinig belt,
Its a 318i European model, M40 Engine.
There are no marks on the front of the cranlshaft.
The British 318 series " Haynes manual" says there is a hole in the flywheel. I found this but how do i set it up on TDC using this. The book also says, use a drill and pass it through the engine block, but at what area of the block?

Any help would be great.

Dave
