Gas low light won't work!! (archive)

I bought the car in June and since then I saw the light work once, but it went out before I had filled up once so I assumed it had burnt out. I changed the bulb and it didn't help. Maybe I'm just not letting the fuel get to 5L, but I don't want to take the chance of running out of gas. Any ideas on how to tell if it works with out being out of gas, or how to fix it?? Thanx in advance
