oil level? (archive)

I recently bought a 91 318is and while changing fluids for the first time to prepare for winter storage, the following problem cropped up. The owners manual says the oil capacity with new filter is 4.4 qts. The parts mangager at my local dealer said the same. So after installing new filter and oil (4.5 qts), my dipstick reads low. I dumped in the other half a qt, and it is still low. It reads about halfway between the dipstick marks. What gives?
