... is that the '89 iS is the best non-M3 E30 out there. It the only year that combines the following features: smaller, body-colored bumpers, ellipsoid headlights and the nice, three-spoke non-airbag steering wheel. It also has the -173 ECU, which is considered less troublesome than earlier -153 units.

(My own preference is the '87, which has the older body style I feel looks lighter and more athletic than later versions.)
