Check this site as there is a mention of a whistling engine in the 325i section. You have to go quite a ways down the page to find it.

ever since it has gotten below 30F here in NJ my 88 325ic has a whistling from the engine area when started. The whistling goes away after a couple of minutes as the car warms up. anyone know what this noise is?
