i've heard that a 4.10 will actually increase top speed.

True and false, it depends on the engine. If the engine is powerful enough to pull through the gearing then it will reach the differential's max speed. But if the engine is weak at the top end it won't have enough power to pull and therefore the top speed would be that point. As an example, M3's have high HP engines and 4.11 gearing. The engine can easily pull to redline in 5th gear thanks to the 4.11 differential, so it can reach it's max speed of 143MPH.
