The convertor shouldn't need replacing unless it's come apart inside, is rusted, or clogged up. I just bought a new ANSA cat-back muffler for $75 because it had a slightly bent tip easily straightened with a pair of pliers. Midas will charge you more than that to cobble up something that'll work. In fact, that's what I just took off my newly acquired 90 325i. A cobbled up Midas muffler mounted backwards, single outlet in (Y'd the original exhaust pipes into it) & single outlet out. Of course I had to buy new muffler brackets since Midas cut and welded them. Go with a system designed for the car if you want it to run right and sound right. Ansa's are under $200 new for the cat back system I believe and all you have to do is bolt it on.
