Depending on where you live, the key might not be as expensive as you think it is. Here in Canada (atleast in my town) BMW dealership charges $20(can) for a regular master key and about twice as much for the one with the light.
You might want to check with the dealer first. It is less of a hassle (in my town they only require your ownership documents and VIN # to get a key made for you!) and the key will work.
