If your pump is as loud as you say.. it is a very good chance this is the cause.

run voltage and pressure tests on your pumps.. I think you are on the right track there....

does it ever stall on cold starts?

if your car is equipped with a cold start injector it could be that your injector is stuck open. This causes the engine to start running rich after a few seconds, and then dies. Giving it throttle helps because you're letting enough extra air in to reduce the richness.
