I just bought a 1986 325es and I'm loving it. Couple of little annoyances, but nothing I can't live with: (brake light on dash was lit...mechanic said it was because of aftermarket pads? True? Coolant light on but resevoir is full, and system seems to work fine.)
Anyway, I'm tired of doom-sayers out there warning me what a nightmare I bought into...gonna cost you a fortune, repairs are outrageous, na na na. Thought I'd come here for support, and occassional tech help.
Now, as soon as I get the hood release cable replaced..Welcome aboard. If you enjoy working on your own car, you're going to have fun with your E30. While they do have a few annoying problems from time to time, they are fairly easy to fix yourself. With the help of the board members and a bentley manual, you'll do fine. 170k is a good number of miles, but if they were well maintained miles you shouldn't have many worries. I have a 89 325i with 130k on it, that is solid as a rock and fast as hell. All you need to do is stay on top of the maintenance and the car will last a long time. Enjoy it and again, welcome aboard.
