Timing belt failure (archive)

I have a chance to buy a nice 325is very very cheaply because the timing belt has failed. When this happens on these engines, does it usually snap in half, or merely skip a few teeth? What kind of damage usually results? I would love to get away with only rebuilding or replacing the head. Is this dreaming? TIA for any advice.
