325i Tach question (archive)

My 87 325i tach has a 4500RPM redline, but I know the engine's redline is much higher. I assume it's a tach out of an e, does anyone know if it will read the correct RPM or if it will be reading the correct needle deflection on the wrong numbers. Little help...
