I also have an 86 325es. You'll love it and it will outhandle any Camaro or Mustang your friends have. Since it's your first car, and you presumably don't have unlimited funds and a mechanic on call, I'd leave it alone until you get more experience. I'd bet that box stock, it will scare the bejeveeies out of you if you actually start driving it hard. And if spinning the tires becomes a regular routine you'll need the money you have for the chip to spend on tires.

First thing you should do is join the BMWCCA and go to the meetings. It will be the best time and mondy you ever spent. Then I'd go to a driving school or run a Solo event.

You have plenty of time to grow into more power.
