My experience has been (with stock cars) standard trans are much quicker. You can drop the clutch at a higher rpm, rather than fight the auto torque converter while you get the rpms up.

My american cars had high rpm torque converters installed that would flash to 3,000 before they engaged, and it really pulled harder than my manual friends cars.

I'd also be curious how the auto bmw's do.
