revving it in P or N is murder on trannies... That's one reason I did the 5 speed swap... accidentally revved it in neutral and the clutch packs started to slip...

,I can rev up my car to 4,5000 rpm, then pop it in D,and the thing goes(and peels).+ it engages smoothly, just like a manual ,doesnt bang in like some american cars Ive driven.I dont know if my tranny is suppose to do that or not,but im not complaining.the 1/2 sec is true though with a little power braking.but I havent raced any other bmws by reving up and poping it in D.yeah, yeah,I know its probably bad for the car,but no problems yet.Bmw trannys are pretty good when it comes to transfering power.

My experience has been (with stock cars) standard trans are much quicker. You can drop the clutch at a higher rpm, rather than fight the auto torque converter while you get the rpms up.

My american cars had high rpm torque converters installed that would flash to 3,000 before they engaged, and it really pulled harder than my manual friends cars.

I'd also be curious how the auto bmw's do.
