Ask the seller when the timing belt was last replaced. If they don't have proof that it was done in the last 35,000 miles or so, and you decide to buy the car, replace the belt immediately, and I mean immediately, before driving the car at all. If it slips or breaks, the engine will be destroyed (bent valves, gouged pistons/head, maybe ruined block). The belt, tensioner, shaft seals, and water pump should be replaced at the same time. It is not hard to do if you are familiar with automotive repair, and the parts are cheap (about $150 total) A shop will probably do it for about $500. Good Luck
