I have been wondering the same thing for almost 5 years now. My '86e does the same thing exactly. Never a problem, my lights all work, I don't worry.

My check light for my brake lights comes on every time i turn on my car. When i do step on my brakes, the light goes off. Then comes back on every time i start up my car again. I have checked all my lights and they are all working correctly. Does anybody have a clue as to what might be causing this problem?

as far as i know that is normal,mine does it too.it is just a safety feature to check your brake and tail lights before you drive.dont worry.
