the bilsteins will be fine, but i would recommend the heavy duties and not the sports unless you want an extremely hard ride. i have the M3 springs with the bilstein HDs on my 1991 325ix and they are very stiff, plenty for spirited driving. only get the sports if you are planning for the track, which i believe is unlikely if you are driving a convertible.
doc.
The Sports and the HDs are valved virtually the
same (supposedly only a few percent difference),
only the Sports are a little shorter than the HDs.
A friend of mine runs the HDs with M3 springs on
his 90 325i and reports that the internal
bumpstops on the HDs bottom out fairly easily
on the road, so he tested his theory over some
speed bumps (slowly) and confirmed it. I ran
the Sports with M3 springs on my 89 325is for a
few months and didn't have any bottoming up front. If i had to do it over again, i'd run the Sports
with the E30 M3 springs.
