I had that feeling . . . thankx for the confirmation. :)

If it is the ecu, you should be able to find one on ebay or through some parts store such as vines auto etc... for 1/4 of that price and you can install it yourself, it just plugs in, all you need to do is remove part of the glove box, the total job should take you 1/2 hour max.

Good luck and don't worry there's a cheaper solution, it sounds like the repair shop is trying to screw you.

I have a '92 318ic that won't start. I've checked the spark plugs (at the distrubutor) and I didn't get spark there. Everything works (ie lights, radio, turn signals . . .), and it turns over, BUT doesn't ever catch or try to catch. (I ran the self diag and it came back a 1228 (it's been some time so I don't remember the exact number, but I do remember it was only one number (using the peddle method of checking))) So I took it to a shop and they said that (after two weeks of messing with it) that it was the brain, it was dead. They said the Promm chip was ok, but the brain wasn't responding to their diags. (They said it would be 1300 to have a used brain installed, seems high)
Question:
1. Does that sound right, or should I take it to another shop.
2. How much is a used and/or new brain. (recommendations for a good one)
3. Can I install it myself (without risking ruining it, they said it came blank and had to be programed.)

Thankx for your help.
