The wipers on my E30 come to rest very high on the windshield, yet when I turn them on, they work just fine - but when turned off, will not come to rest as intended down low on the windshield.

Can anyone suggest what to do?

You say that the wipers work normally when they are switched on. Before you go pulling your cowl off and moving arms around, answer this question - When you turn the wipers off do they keep moving and then stop in the same place up the screen all the time or do they just stop wherever they are when you turn the switch off?

If they don't keep moving chances are that your wiper relay is cactus. I had this problem with mine. Lift the bonnet and open the relay and fuse box and while someone is operating the wiper switch wriggle the appropriate relay around (it is the biggest one in the box). This may or may not help. My mechanic (who is a BMW trained technician) told me that this is a common problem in E30's. He pulled mine out and resoldered a couple of connections inside (not sure which didn't get close enough to see) and said this would do as a temporary fix but eventually I would have to lash out for a new one. Maybe see if you can swap one temporarily with a person whose wipers work fine and see if that fixes the problem.
