the most bang for the buck is a low psi turbo. check out korman auto works. they have a mosselman turbo specifically for your car. the nice thing is nothing changes as far as the engine set up is concerned. it stays stock. it does not decrease expected life and can be worked on by anybody.
BUT, the horsepower and torque increase will blow your mind. its a weekend job that does not require special tools. check out their web site.
Is there a reasonable way to get 20 more hp from the 91 318is? It has to pass Calif emissions and be livable, i.e. no booming exhaust.

I going to have the head off soon, it would be a good time to swap cams if need be.
