BMM 325is 87' Exhaust *need advice please* (archive)

I have a dual exhaust on my BMW, and have a hole in it about 8" towards the front of the car from the back end of the muffler. This hole is on the pipe that connects the catalytic converter to the muffler.

Recently I had a exhaust guy tell me that I should just goto a 2.5" single pipe between my cat and my muffler instead of dual. Does this make sense? What are the consequences, good and bad of changing to single wide pipe?
