how do you diagnose a broken speedometer?? (archive)

my speedometer died the other day. just quit while i was driving down the road. pulled out the instrument cluster and checked the wiring-all connected OK.
anyone know how to tell if the problem is in the speedo itself? the differential pulse sender or somewhere else? any suggestions on tests that i can do to see where the problem is and fix it?
any suggestions are, as always, very welcome.
