Had the airbox off my '86 es yesterday. Checking for free travel in the airflow meter. Seemed fine, but there is significant brown varnish-like deposits in both the exit end of the airflow meter, (where it meets the intake boot) and in the throttle body. Will carb cleaner sprayed into the throttle risk mucking up my injectors?

You shouldn't really spray anything into your AFM. If the deposits are not preventing the movement and full closing of the flap then leave it alone. If you insist on getting it clean, use a lint free cloth sprayed with carb cleaner and wipe out the deposit by hand. You don't want any of that getting sucked up into your engine anyway.
