Flush mount stereo? (archive)

Is it possible to flush-mount an aftermarket receiver in an e30? The stock receiver is flush-mounted, but all aftermarket receivers I've seen need a trim ring and consequently jut out a centimeter or so. I'd like to install an aftermarket receiver, but retain as much of the stock look as possible.

If this is possible, does it apply to all receiver brands, or only certain ones?
