Did my first Autocross today (archive)

The autocross was a BMWCCA event, and it was awesome, a helluvalotta fun. And I accomplished my goals, which were:
- not break anything
- not hit any cones
- improve my times run-to-run
My car is a completely stock '87 325is.

My first run was a slow 64 seconds, then I did a smooth 58, a wild 58, and a satifying 56.57. The most embarrassing moment was when I ground the gears on a 1st-2nd shift and the course announcer joked, "use forward gears only, please!"

The fastest car out there was a race-prepared E36 M3, which did the course in about 45 seconds. The fastest E30 was a guy named Rich, who smoked the course in 49 seconds, with a stock engine, coil-over suspension, and Hoosier race tires.

I'm going to try to have a new suspension & wheels by the next autocross, one month away. Then I'll have no excuses.
