Whereis your located? While I was replacing my '91 325ic broken stalk I found it was plugged into the back of the "mehcanism" around the column, meaning the steering wheel, airbag, and column cover et. al. had to come off to unplug the flasher unit. So in my case it is an hour disassembly job being very cautious about disconnecting all the battery/sensors/airbag. and you need a torx for the back of the steering wheel. Good Luck.

91 318is if that makes any difference.
