e30 325 pre purchase points (archive)

I have a friend who has asked me to help them purchase an early/mid 80's 3 series. I suggested the 325 and avoid the 'e' model. I know very little about these cars and would like to know how many models are available, especially as a 2 door version, and what things to look for in the maitenance records and pre-purchase inspection. Can someone provide a list of trouble items?
