It all depends on what you want. If you are wanting a fairly fast car then go for the 325i or 325is. Unless it says i then it has the eta motor. The main point of concern with these cars is the timing belt. If it breaks then you can count on probally buying a new engine. They should be replaced every 50 to 60k miles. BMW redsigned the rad set up in 88 I beleave so that one of the colent hoses does not run near the ps pump. I hear that durring hot days in hard corning that the engine can shift enough to cut the house. I have not experianced this though, but my motot mounts were broken when I got the car. My car has over 200k miles and runs great. The only problems I have are regular mantiance stuff that needs up keep on an older car. Good luck to ya.

I have a friend who has asked me to help them purchase an early/mid 80's 3 series. I suggested the 325 and avoid the 'e' model. I know very little about these cars and would like to know how many models are available, especially as a 2 door version, and what things to look for in the maitenance records and pre-purchase inspection. Can someone provide a list of trouble items?
