My 84 318i windshield wipers will work one moment, and totally fail the next. There isn't any fading in the motor or anything- any suggestions?

Yep, thats what happens when your wiper relay somehow gets wet. They literally freak-out, until they are dry. Thats why I always seal my fusebox shut- using the handy thumbscrew found near the early 3er fusebox, housing two bullet-type fuses. Screw the box shut from the upper right corner of the fusebox right into the unthreaded area. That way, you can wash the engine with more confidence.
