auto trans slipping (archive)

my '85 318i is slipping in 1st and 2nd gear. Also slipping in reverse after reaching norm operating temp. Is this a normal problem with an easy fix from an overhaul stand point. Is there something special to look for or replace during an overhaul, example cracked or split piston, worn sprag? Is there some updated parts that should be installed?
