The older cars like pre 90 have VIN numbers that are unique for US market. This is a tip off to a possible grey market import. CARFAX usually will return no info about make and model but have all the other registration history. I am sure you can track the history through BMW HQ archives but why? 2002 owners do it often to find the history their classic.
