The instruments on my '89 325is work for about 3 seconds after I start the car - then the tach, fuel gauge, and temp gauge, and several lights at the bottom of the cluster go dead. Same thing with the fan switch on my climate control. All the fuses are OK, and I checked the relays to make sure they're in tight. Any suggestions where to look before I risk spending tons of $$$ on diagnostics?

Perhaps pull you instr. console. Check that the electrical connectors to rear of console are properly connected/seated. The remove the connector plugs and check for any corrosion on connector pins. If ok. then disassemble cluster (to get inside to gauges) and check main printed circuit board that gauges are mounted on; there may be corrosion or poor connections (from gauges to PCB). But sounds like perhaps just connector problem going to entire console; as you said all gauges (except fuel??) stop operating. Pulling console is not difficult.
Not sure what is problem w/fan switch; again, perhaps bad connector.
Hope this helps / good luck / Bill
