325IS Possible Purchase Advice Please (archive)

Greetings. Thinking of Buying a 1988 325is 2dr. Car seems in basically good shape and has ~ 125000 miles (new timing belt). Needs some tie rods and control arms. No rust, cracked dash, slightly worn interior. Motor sounds good but I've not driven yet. When starting the car, the tach bounces around a bit, but then stabilizes after a few minutes. Does anyone know what the deal is with that? Seller says he replaced the cluster.

What other issues might I want to consider with a car of this vintage (I have 85 325e but that's a different machine)? Seller is leaving town and wants $2500.00. Aside from some missing window chrome and a bad paint job, body looks good. Could be a nice project car....how long till I'll need to rebuild the engine?
