I just replaced the AFM on my 87 325i with a used unit for $75 (compared to close to $300 new). The symptoms were a slight hesitation just off idle that caused stumbling. I checked the resistance on the AFM and, sure enough, the values kicked in after adle. replacing the AFM solvedthe problem. I also found out the throttle position switch is tweaked and needs replacing. I suggest you have a good mechanic test the AFM. Also, if you already haven't, replace old fuel and vacuum lines. I just replaced the breather hose that goes from the valve cover to the throttle body and the car seems to he happier.
