Negative effects of chips (archive)

Does having a chip installed put more wear and tear on other components on the car. Also can having a chip mask or make finding a problem more difficult if and when I have a computer diagnostic? Does anybody not suggest having a chip unless other modifications are done first when you are talking about a stock car? (1988 325ix) 76k
