I've had my 88 for over 3 years. I've had nothing but good luck. They do require a bit more maintainance (front end stuff like CV boots, front diff juice, xfer case juice, ect).

You'll have to figure out what you want to do with it. Full race-type track car is basically out of the question unless you have alot of fab knowledge/$$$. Upgrade parts are difficult if not impossible to find. Some people say it's a good track car, then again some say it's just slow because of the completely different (from other E30s) front end geometry. I do know it has (typical front drive) understeer.
Don't cut coils to lower it. Bad mojo. You can't cut the rears, anyway. Doesn't really do much to lower the front only. Buy the springs from turnermotorsport.com See link for pictures.
Solid motor. The M20 is basically bulletproof minus the timing belt.
Fuel economy? Well, I get 27 mpg on the highway with a Jim C chip and Stromung exhaust (~72mph). It has just under 150K miles on it.
Keep in mind, I do all my own work, so I don't really have alot of expenses. Just experiences...
