I found an article that said to put tape around the shifter shaft, just below the know and then put vice-grips on the tape... then use something to pry upward on the shifter knob. I still couldn't get the wooden replacement knob off to put back on an original knob. I had to take a wood chisel to the wooden knob and split it in quarters to remove it. I found someone had epoxied the knob on. Rotating the knob should be a no no as it will break off the little protuberance on the knob that locks into the slot on the shifter shaft. Hope this helps.
