I am in process of changing my oil pan gasket and am having difficulty getting things back together without ruining the new gasket. I ruined one today and am hoping someone can give me some insight as to what steps I can take to remedy my problem. This is what I have done so far:

1) Placed the car on ramps.

2) Removed the little cover on the front of the transmission in order to remove the oil pan screws.

3) Removed the two bolts which hold the steering rack in place and pulled it forward.

4) Removed the oil pan screws.

5) I was not able to pull the pan out at this point so I had to remove the oil pump through the small opening and drop it in the pan. Then I was able to remove the pan.

6) Cleaned the oil pan cover and removed the rubber or silicone which had been used previously. There was no cork gasket.

This is where I am having problems. Today I put the new gasket on the oil pan, placed the oil pump inside the pan and slid the pan back into position. Then I attempted to grab the oil pump through the small opening, and connect the metal rod which connects to the pump and the block. While trying to maneuver the pump back into position to get it bolted back on, I tore up the new gasket. There just isn't enough room in there to work.

I have heard that you can jack up the motor. Will this help me ? If so, what bolts do I need to remove, how many are there, and where are they located.

I have also heard people talk about removing the subframe. I'm not sure I can do this while my car is on ramps, and I'm not sure where the bolts are located.

I appreciate your input...

Frustrated....Dave...
