On my last run of yesterday's autocross, my power-steering pulley cut through the lower radiator hose of my '87 325is. Arrgh! I believe that this is a result of the engine shifting in its mounts, shoving the pulley over during hard cornering.

I've heard that you can prevent this problem by replacing the engine mounts with stiffer ones from a 5-series model. Has anyone tried this? How hard is it to replace motor mounts? Thanks for your help.

I've seen this happen on several 87 325i/is cars.
The stiffer engine mounts you want are from a '77
E12 model 528i. The part # is 11 81 1 132 322.

Follow Bill's directions for removing one of the
two locating nubs, and when you install them it
makes life a lot easier to loosen the upper and
lower mount bolts, then unbolt the passenger side
arm from the engine block before removing the
mounts. This makes it easier to remove the
passenger side mount, and also makes it easier
maneuver the new mount into the hole in the
subframe.
