Most radios hold themselves in by a mounting ring that has these metal ears that push against the back of the hole and a metal ring that holds the front in, the radio manual from my 85 had these and all new aftermarket radios have these, you will need to find the appropriate trim ring for the radio you put in.

Was it a different BMW radio or another manufacturer?
