The tach can be removed separately, as can the speedo. I was having trouble with my speedo doing the same thing you describe. (Important symptom: when you bang the dash with your fist the problem corrects itself, if not the sensor or sensor wire under the hood may be broken). Remove the instrument cluster. There are 4 blade contacts that go into the speedo, I assume the tach is similar. If you remove the tach, clean the connections up (I even tinned them with solder) and the problem will go away. (if you need an extra tach I have one).

Those relays are the big squares with the K1, K7 labels over them in the fuse box and that black plastic cover about 6-8 inches towards of the front of the car from the fuse box. I thoug hmaybe one of them was affected by the heat.

The dead tach adds a possibility. There is a sensor either at the rear or front depending on the motor that tells the ECM where the crank is and this might have something to do with the Tach also. I am not certain about the tach thing but I ahve been told that the ECM will not allow the engine to start without a reading from this sensor. I am at work and away from my manual so I cannot confirm this right now.

I take it that is different from a crank sensor? I have been told that if the crank sensor is bad the motor shouldn't start hot or cold, not just hot. By the this is an '86 325 with the straight 6 in it. I spoke with mechanic today who said he is shipping my old ecm back with an extra unit to test the car with. I have a sneaking idea I will still have the same problem and I am going to put a breaker bar through the windshield :) Should I go and get the bentley manual, is there where you get your information. Thanks for keeping me posted so quickly. When talking with these garages in the area it seems that I know more, and where to look than they do. I spent three hundred bucks a couple of weeks ago at the shop and came home with the same problem.
