I'm looking to buy one of the following cars:

1991 318is
or
1989-1991 325is

I want to use this car as a daily driver. What problem areas should I look out for? Any additional advice you could give would be great.

Thanks

Norbert

Well, you wanted to know.....first-off, go with the 325i. Much more bang for the buck, by far. Ok, now the caveats:

1989-1991 325i/iS/iC
* Front wheel bearings will develop "roady" sound
Solution: Replace
* Steering rack may hiss, or get stiff, and/or both
Solution: Never keep the wheel at full lock for more than 5 seconds. Pray you dont need to replace it. Try sealant.
* Brake Light Switch may stay ON - A must replace item. Who wants to get pulled-over for riding their brakes?!?
* High-Mileage ones will likely have the terminally-congested OEM radiator intact. And you tried EVERYTHING to cure the constant FEVER your car has. Remember, a decade of deposit-forming tap water, will fuse the paperthin water passages of the BEHR unit shut. Invest.
* Warped Brake Rotors. Cannot resurface(turn) BMW rotors. Its the inferior metals used to lathe-out your rotors. Normal driving/stopping will make no difference. Its a fact of BMW ownership.
* Timing Belt snaps- engine goes BOOM!@ ....then NOTHING.....Keep paying your insurer, but flouting the 60k rule on the belt, can leave you working many days overtime, to keep working...

Other than these *POTENTIAL* yet, notorious issues- your E30 can be beat repeatedly, and still keeps coming-back like a hungry puppy, wanting MORE!

Zach
