e36 M3 is the way to go mainly because there's so much documentation on the swap. The e34 M5 would no doubt fit, but I'm not sure that it would be cost effective. the m50 is a reliable (fairly) easy swap, and it's been done before, so you're not going to encounter any weird issues in doing so that you may find w/ the e34 M5. as far as building the hell out of your m20, not a chance! :)

I'm planning on building a more powerful engine for my '89 325is. I'd like to get 250 hp. I could build the hell out of my m20, transplant an m50, or how about an engine from an E34 M5. Would the M5 engine fit? Also, I'm not sure if I like the idea of putting a different engine in my car. What do you guys think?
