Almost all auto glass shops repair cracks and it's not that expensive. I don't think it is such a good idea to try fixing it yourself. The windshield is not just to protect you from the elements, but also helps stop the roof from collapsing in a roll.

From what you have described, I doubt any shop will try to repair. Once you get a crack that goes all the way across, its time to replace. I replaced the backlash (rear windshield) in my car (the rear is more expensive than the front because of the defrost elements) and it only cost me $350 CND.
