My E30 is usually right about 3/4 in city traffic... gets a bit above 3/4 when at a light or drive thru or something.

After going 80mph for about a min and half it went just above 1/4 :)

seems to me your are taking a big gamble.Why does your gauge idle so much? i doubt it suppose to be like that,...a car that sits above 3/4 and higher would have no trouble hitting red either.
I have an E30 aswell,..overheated few times but cooling system has been solved just keep in mind engine wear.The E30s and any bimmers arnt worth neglecting.

My M42 runs past straight up to three quarters. Is this normal? I have a new fan clutch. Anyone using water wetter with any success? What about a reduced T-stat temp setting?
