THANK YOU, ALL!!!!! Mission accomplished. I didn't put the lubricant on the bushing itself - I followed the Bentley instructions to the letter. After reading everyone's suggestions and pondering the problem, I got the bushing on when I slopped it up well with the "lubricant". Actually, turpentine is sort of sticky and that is part of the problem, I think. But the BMW Norhtwest parts guy told me that their "special lubricant" is just turpentine.
